AERIS is a spin-off of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) comprising experts from the GENOCOV research group (UAB) aimed at helping industries and public entities to improve the environmental quality of their emissions founded in 2009. AERIS has a large experience designing, construction and operation highly automated lab-, pilot- and industrial-scale plants for environmental research purposes. Mostly, this experience has been devoted to biological technologies for water and gas purification and for solid waste seizing (as, e.g., for the extraction of valuable materials or energy). These are always developed according to the specific customer needs. This experience includes fermenters, air-lift reactors, sequencing batch reactors (SBR), photobioreactors, etc. Also, other of AERIS main business areas is the optimization of the biological and/or physico-chemical depuration of natural and industrial liquid streams containing nutrients, COD and/or recalcitrant compounds. In this field, numerous R+D and technological implementation projects have been carried out in the last years, mostly in paper-producing, tannery and food industries. Since 2015, AERIS has been awarded the Innovative SME seal by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, as a proof of its deep commitment to research.
Despite being a company with only 10 years of life, AERIS has great experience in participating in publicly funded projects. AERIS currently participates in 7 projects financed by the EU (two RISE, one CIRC and two SMART and one LIFE), integrated in different aspects of the environmental field. AERIS has the ability to develop tailor-made pilot plants, with a high level of sensorization and autonomy, valid for research in the environmental field. This background allows for the selection of the most adequate materials and operational conditions in order to maximise the reliability and robustness of the plant.
